Midway to Publish 3 Titles Based On the Unreal Franchise
Steve @ 6:49 PM EDT
CHICAGO – JUNE 28, 2004 - Midway Games Inc., a leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, today announced a multi-year, multi-product agreement with Epic Games to publish three new videogames based on the popular Unreal® franchise. The agreement marks Midway's entrance into the premium PC games sector with a property that has sold more than seven million units worldwide and generated nearly $200 million in revenue at retail since the introduction of Unreal Tournament in 1999.

Under terms of the agreement, Midway obtains worldwide publishing rights for the three Unreal titles from Epic, including Unreal Championship® 2, an Xbox® exclusive title scheduled to ship in 2005, and two future installments of Unreal Tournament® on PC and upcoming next generation consoles. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Only Korean PC rights were excluded from the deal.

"This relationship with Epic further bolsters the strength of our portfolio of top-rated games and allows us to leverage the marketing capabilities of our organization to take the Unreal franchise to an even broader audience of gamers," said David Zucker, president and chief executive officer of Midway. "It immediately establishes Midway as a leader in the PC games sector. Additionally, Unreal Championship 2, scheduled for introduction in February, should further extend Midway's growing track record for distributing top quality games. We are delighted that Epic chose Midway over other publishers and we look forward to working closely with the Epic team to carefully manage this valuable franchise."

"Midway gets it. They hit right at the heart of gamers. Not only did they create many classics including Defender, NFL Blitz and Mortal Kombat, but they're making great new games such as Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, The Suffering, NBA Ballers, NARC and Area 51. They make awesome games and don't apologize for it, so we think games like Unreal Tournament will fit in perfectly here," said Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder, Epic Games. "In our opinion Midway is doing the industry's best marketing and promotional campaigns and they will contribute strongly to the ongoing success of the Unreal franchise."

Scheduled to arrive exclusively for Xbox in February 2005, Unreal Championship 2 brings a whole new level of intensity to the series as gamers are blessed with superhuman agility that arms them for battle against deadly characters or readies them for hand-to-hand melee combat. Taking the battle online and around the world, Unreal Championship 2 pits players against each other in an eight-person Xbox Live!™ multiplayer challenge where only the strong survive. Built from the ground up for the Xbox, Unreal Championship 2 features all new gameplay elements, including a deep melee combat system that seamlessly blends in with the ranged weapon combat the series is known for, a full story-driven single-player mode, dozens of all new maps, new game modes and an arsenal of new weaponry. Additional information can be obtained through the Unreal Championship 2 web site at http://www.unrealchampionship2.com

Each celebrity comes equipped with his/her own characteristic data, unique to the real life personality being emulated. In addition to their physical likeness, every celebrity possesses a set of moods and drives that steer their motivations and reactions in specific social situations. Even their own zodiac signs mysteriously affect the celebrity guests. Players have the opportunity to interact with these celebrities in order to build meaningful friendships, strike profitable business deals, or even stimulate a sizzling romance.

“I am very excited about my cameo in this game,” said internationally known actress, model, TV host and Playboy favorite Carmen Electra. “I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Hef and the incredible lifestyle he lives, and to have a virtual avatar representing me in 'Playboy: The Mansion' is very exciting. I look forward to seeing myself at many of the incredible parties that gamers will throw in their virtual Playboy Mansions on the PlayStation2, Xbox and PC.”

To kick off the addition of these celebrities in the game, ARUSH Entertainment and Groove Games are happy to announce a new Web site dedicated to the title. Located at http://www.PlayHef.com , gamers can check out the latest news and info, screenshots, artwork, downloadable features and forums where they can talk with others about the game and their own ideas on how they will live the lifestyle of the world’s ultimate Playboy.

“We are happy to have the star caliber that our celebrities bring to this game,” said Jim Perkins, founder, president and CEO of ARUSH Entertainment. “The best part about 'Playboy: The Mansion' is throwing kick-ass parties, and having cool celebs like Carmen and Tom make the experience more realistic for gamers. They aren’t partying with Adrian Actor; they are partying with people they can see on TV or in movies any day of the week.”

The release of "Playboy: The Mansion(tm)" marks Playboy’s entry into the video game category and underlines the growth of Playboy’s licensing business in the entertainment arena. In addition to game industry advertising and merchandising initiatives, ARUSH and Groove will aggressively market the game in Playboy magazine and on Playboy.com to support the launch.

Message From Blinx
Steve @ 5:21 PM EDT
Blinx

“After a glorious vacation, I’m back. The last time you saw me, I was fighting that menacing group of pigs! Just wait until we show them how I’ve improved the skill of time sweeping during my travels! I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I’ve become quite a master of controlling and manipulating every second of every day. In my most recent battle, I was up against a gang of pigs who tried to manipulate the space around me by creating a worm hole, can you believe that?! Don’t worry; I fooled them by pausing time. I was able to dart around the pig-headed bullies while they stood like stone, not knowing what was happening. The best part is my gang and I defeated them using some serious time control and teamwork!

Not only have I become a master of time, I have acquired a new wardrobe too! I can decide what I want my clothes to look like and even decide what length I want my tail to be. Oh, and through the miracle of color contacts, I can choose what color eyes I’ll have! How cleverly cool is that?! Every day is a new adventure and I have the wardrobe to prove it. What can I say, I’m the coolest cat around! Next time you hear from me, I’ll probably be in the middle of a heated battle. So, stay tuned…

Microsoft Game Studios’ “Blinx 2: Masters of Time Space” is the anticipated sequel to the highly acclaimed “Blinx: The Time Sweeper.” “Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space” continues the adventures of Blinx, a heroic cat with the ability to make time slow, fast forward, rewind, or altogether stop. In this sequel, Blinx and his squad of tough, agile cats use their time control powers to battle menacing time monsters, outmaneuver the criminal pig gang, and discover why time is disappearing.

Acclaim Reveals Juiced "Show Off" Mode + Screens
    Steve @ 10:54 PM EDT
You’ve just blown $50,000 upgrading every nut, bolt and panel of a Nissan 300 ZX, transforming a moderately hot production sports coupe into the automobile equivalent of a fighter jet. Why? Simply because it will blow away anything that dares to race you? Not quite! It’s because it makes you look good, especially when you start pulling crazy maneuvers on the street, getting the crowd going wild as you donut and J-turn your way across town. It’s good to ‘Show-off’ and it’s only available in Juiced.

What every modder craves is attention and respect in equal measure, and the ‘Show-off’ event is exactly where to get both… or lose both! In Juiced, ‘Show-off’ is a totally unique mode providing a freestyle event against the clock. It’s not racing, but you have a set amount of time to pull classy maneuvers and impress the crowd. What’s more, ‘Show- Off’ mode is not only available in the single player game. It’s available online too!

In Online Career mode, you get the chance to go head to head with up to six other petrol heads simultaneously, battling it out for the maximum points. You take online any of the cars you have bought and modded in your Career Collection, complete with personalized paint job. Best of all, it’s possible to compete in a ‘Show-off’ for Pink Slips – winner not only takes the glory, but the opponent’s car too!

Sophisticated physics are what make the ‘Show-off’ mode possible and so much fun. In the movies, we’ve all seen Bootleg turns (U-turns), J turns, donuts and other motorized madness. In Juiced you get to try them all, in over 45 different types of car. It takes real skill to master all the moves in every model… on the way you’ll find that some cars are better than others for certain moves, and that’s all part of the game.

How well you perform also depends very much on the way you have modified your car. For example, a four wheel drive Skyline kitted out with rock-solid suspension, full spoilers and the most expensive tires is probably not your best choice for drifting or pulling donuts. On the other hand, an old Nissan 300 ZX with rear wheel drive, up-rated power and a short ratio gear-box is just right. Take a look at the real-life example. Front wheel drives can be fun too, but you’ll need to learn completely different ways of executing the same maneuvers.

In all there are nine distinct maneuvers to master in ‘Show-off’ mode, from donuts to high speed 360-degree turns, but that’s just the start. By linking moves together successfully, you’ll boost your score considerable. Make a mistake and you’ll wipe out your hard earned points.

Once you have mastered each maneuver, your mission is to string them together to create high-speed ballet in cars. So start with a half dozen, smoking donuts, nitro your way to a maximum speed run, bleed off energy in a sweeping drift around a curve and get ready for the grand finale… a 180 degree turn that has you traveling backwards at high speed, ready to execute a classic J-Turn. And to put a cherry on top, another round of donuts followed by a handbrake turn as you dash to cross the line. Executed perfectly, this sequence will have the crowd screaming for more, and see your score multipliers go through the roof.

Because it takes skill to master the moves, it’s quite easy to damage your vehicle getting it right, so it’s best to start off in something that’s not too expensive to repair. Once you feel confident, it’s time to start taking your better cars out on the streets. The more ‘Juiced’ your ride, the more respect you’ll earn in certain parts of town. Where you perform is key too. Some areas of the City are better suited to show-offs than others and only by gaining enough respect to enter any neighborhood will you get to see all the streets. And if you get it wrong, the crowd lets you know, heckling you and taunting you on poor performance.

The fine control of the maneuvers requires very careful balancing between throttle and brakes. Drifting is a good example, where you approach the bend and decelerate, then flip the steering wheel to get the back end out while accelerating to get the drift going. In the case of a 360 degree turn it’s all about getting the timing right for braking and accelerating. If you don’t get the braking right, you won’t have enough momentum to approach 180 degrees, and if you don’t accelerate at the right spot you won’t pull the nose around to face the same direction as the one you started with. Getting it wrong in both cases will probably lead to damage because you need relatively high speed to execute a 360.

In the Career mode of Juiced, you’ll need to compete in ‘Show-offs’ to gain enough respect to complete the game. And while it’s not racing, it will teach you dozens of useful tricks for getting out of trouble when you lose it on the track. Of course, hi-scores in the ‘Show-off’ events’ are recorded and stored on-line if you have the right broadband connections. On Xbox, you don’t even have to be playing someone else to get your good results up on the global rankings. As long as you have an active Xbox Live link, your scores are posted automatically.

Acclaim Loses Turok and MLBPA Licenses?
    Steve @ 3:34 PM EDT
According to Gamesindustry.biz, Acclaim is losing some of its well known game licenses.

There was further bad news for troubled publisher Acclaim in its latest round of regulatory disclosure documents, as the company admitted that it has lost the rights to the Turok franchise and Major League Baseball.

Both licenses have been lost for the same reason - alleged non-payment of royalties due - and while the Turok franchise has been effectively dead in the water anyway since the commercially disastrous Turok: Evolution two years ago, the loss of the baseball license will affect one of Acclaim's biggest titles, All-Star Baseball.
